In 2020 we were approached by TwelfthMan to assist them with their typographic needs for the brand refresh of the UEFA Champions League.
Champions Display
The task at hand was to create a custom font that would complement their existing font palette. Intended for display purposes, the new typeface would have to work across a wide range of touchpoints, from social media to TV match-day graphics to pitch sideline banners.
Champions Display sets a different tone. It is built for short, concise and impactful storytelling that triggers an emotional response. It makes a statement and seizes the moment.
It is ownable and unique, and a significant aspect of the competition’s identity. It has been created with the digital world in mind, for example by optimising space in vertical environments such as mobile screens.
The UEFA Champions League custom font was released for the 2020-21 season, supporting all European Latin and Cyrillic languages.
Logotype update
In addition to the custom font, we redrawn the typography of the classic wordmark. We evolved ITC Novarese’s original letterforms with sharper wedge serifs inspired by the UCL starball and optimised its weight and proportions for improved on-screen rendering.
